THE MONASTERY OF KHYUNGMO
The Monastery Khyungmo is situated in the Guide county, in Qinghai province.
It belongs to the Bön tradition, the autochthonous spiritual tradition in Tibet before the introduction of Buddhism. The legend reports that in the XIV century a Bönpo monk, Yeshes rgyal mtshan, sent by his Master to spread the Bön teaching, left for gYang lun ra gsum, in northern Amdo.
During his journey, near Lake Kokonor, Yeshes opened the reliquary his Master had entrusted him, with the recommendation not to open it until he reached his destination. From the urn a pigeon soared, dMag dpon, considered a guardian of Bön, and it is still believed that dMag dpon protects the Bönpo population living on the shores of the famous sacred lake.
Once he arrived in Dongche, one of the three valleys of Khri ka, Yeshes rgyal mtshan built, in the traditional architectural style, Khyungmo lha kang Monastery, which remained active for centuries until its destruction during the cultural revolution.
Khyungmo Topden Wangshulk, the current Abbot of the partially reconstructed Monastery, has asked ASIA for help in the construction of a traditional Bönpo Study College where the young monks will be able to learn the ancient Bön traditions accurately taught by the Master Khenpo Zodpa Gyurmed, who studied in Manri Monastery where he took the academic Geshe degree (equivalent to a Theology Ph.D.).
The Monastery is attended by the village people, mostly seniors, who go there every day in order to accomplish religious ceremonies and practices.
