URAWATTA NURSERY SCHOOL
The Urawatta nursery school is situated on the ground floor of the Fishery Society’s building, the seat of the fishermen’s cooperative. An ample space was reserved for the children inside the building, which is the centre of the village’s professional and social activities. The school’s rooms are filled with colourful furniture, endowed with toys, drawing material and musical instruments.
The school follows the Montessori method, largely used in Sri Lanka, and presently 20 children are enrolled with just one teacher.
The Urawatta nursery school’s survival is crucial for the development and improvement of the community life conditions. As a matter of fact, its existence allowS the children’s mothers to work in the craft cooperative, now one of the main sources of the village’s income.

WERAGAMA NURSERY SCHOOL
The nursery school “Rainbow” was inaugurated in September 2007, in the framework of a big post-Tsunami reconstruction project financed by the Italian Cooperation. ASIA and other humanitarian organizations participated to the project. The facility was strongly requested by the population of the newly reconstructed village, together with other community groups.
Weragama people’s commitment to run and manage the nursery school is very strong, they even set up a parents’ council to administer the school. Presently, there are 25 children attending, divided into two classes. Thanks to the teachers’ reliability and enthusiasm, the nursery school is the seat of many social gatherings and activities starring the village’s children.
