CONTEXT
The project is implemented within the emergency context generated by the earthquake of 28 March 2025, which severely affected several areas of the country, further aggravating a situation already characterized by strong political instability and widespread armed conflict. In the Mandalay region, many educational infrastructures were damaged or made unusable, limiting access to education for children and adolescents and increasing the risk of school dropout. At the same time, the increase in humanitarian operations and stricter controls by authorities have made access to vulnerable communities and coordination of interventions more complex. In this scenario, the project aims to support the recovery of the local education system through school rehabilitation, improvement of hygiene and sanitation conditions, distribution of school materials, and training and awareness-raising activities for students and teachers in the townships of Kyaukse, Sintgaing, Yamethin and Pyawbwe
OBJECTIVES
General objective:
To contribute to the recovery of the formal and informal education sector in the communities most affected by the earthquake in southern Mandalay.
Specific objectives:
To enable students and children in the most vulnerable formal and informal educational facilities in Mandalay to safely access basic education, protection and WASH services.
ACTIVITIES
- Identification of the most vulnerable formal and informal educational facilities in the Mandalay region
- Teacher training on Disaster Risk Management
- Reconstruction and rehabilitation of at least 8 damaged structures
- Construction and installation of water supply systems
RESULTS
- Priority schools identified in the Mandalay region and students guaranteed access to formal and informal education as well as protection services.
- The most vulnerable formal and informal educational facilities in the Mandalay region have access to basic WASH services.
BENEFICIARIES
Direct beneficiaries: approximately 2,000 people (students and teachers)
Indirect beneficiaries: approximately 8,000 people (families of beneficiaries)
