CONTEXT
Myanmar has been facing a severe humanitarian crisis for several years, aggravated by internal conflict, political instability and the progressive deterioration of the population’s socio-economic conditions. In recent years, this situation has been further compounded by natural disasters that have severely affected infrastructure and essential services. Among these, the earthquake of 28 March 2025 severely affected the Mandalay and Sagaing regions, causing thousands of deaths and new displacements, as well as serious damage to school infrastructure. In Mandalay Region, ASIA has been responding since the first phase of the emergency, providing assistance to the affected population and subsequently focusing its intervention on the progressive restoration of essential services. In Kyaukse District, consultations with local communities and schools highlighted, in particular, the need to improve sanitation conditions in schools and to support the most vulnerable students and families in accessing the materials needed to attend school. The project builds on this response, contributing to safer, more dignified and appropriate learning environments through the rehabilitation of sanitation facilities damaged by the earthquake and the provision of educational materials and equipment to schools.
OBJECTIVES
General objective:
To contribute to restoring adequate, safe and inclusive conditions for access to education for children from communities affected by the March 2025 earthquake in Kyaukse District, Mandalay Region.
Specific objectives:
To improve sanitation and learning conditions for students in 11 schools in Kyaukse District through the rehabilitation of damaged WASH facilities and the provision of educational materials and school equipment.
ACTIVITIES
- Rehabilitation of four latrine blocks in five schools in Kyaukse District, Kyaukse Township.
- Distribution of educational materials to six schools in Kyaukse District, in Kyaukse and Sintgaing Townships.
RESULTS
- Improved sanitation and safety conditions in the target schools through the rehabilitation of sanitation facilities damaged by the earthquake.
- Improved learning conditions for students in the target schools through access to adequate educational materials and school equipment.
BENEFICIARIES
Direct beneficiaries: 4,700 people (4,679 students and 21 teachers)
Indirect beneficiaries: Students’ families and school communities in the target areas.
