The district of Asgat is one of the 13 districts in which the province of Sükhbaatar is divided, in Eastern Mongolia. Located at about 1,050 meters above sea level, it is characterized by mountains, hills and steppe areas that make it compatible with agricultural activities.

Childhood schooling is mandatory in Mongolia until the age of eighteen and, although Mongol society understands the importance of education for children, the nomadic reality in the rural areas creates considerable logistical difficulties for the daily attendance of the lessons.

The Asgat school is the only educational facility for about 3,600 inhabitants in the district, and counts 264 students, between 6 and 14, of whom 52 reside in the annexed dormitory, built in 2009.

80% of the children of this school come from families of nomadic shepherds, which means that the demand for beds is considerably higher than the capacity of the structure and that often the brothers must share the same bed. Despite the recent construction, which was built with poor quality materials, the dormitory already presents numerous problems and does not have a bathroom. The latrines are outside the building.

Furthermore, the water from the school’s own well is not drinkable, and the school is forced to buy water from the provincial capital, Baruun-Urt, which is 45 km of unpaved track from Asgat.

ASIA’s intervention aims to improve the reception of Asgat’s primary school students. If on the one hand the necessary renovations were made to the existing dormitory so that the resident children can live in healthy conditions, on the other the school has been equipped with a water purification system, used both for drinking and for the internal canteen.

The project activities include the renovation of the roof and the internal restructuring of the dormitory, the complete analysis of the well’s water and the identification, purchase and transport of the best water purification system; the construction of a new building for the extension of the kitchen and the installation of the purification system and the connection to the water and the realization of the consequent connections of water, heating and electricity to the new building.
