CONTEXT
Myanmar continues to experience a severe humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict that began with the 2021 coup d’état, exacerbated by the effects of climate change and repeated natural disasters. The earthquake of March 28, 2025, severely affected the Mandalay Region, destroying homes, health and agricultural infrastructure, irrigation systems, and livelihoods. The townships of Kyaukse and Sintgaing, already characterized by high levels of vulnerability, are experiencing a deterioration in food security, access to basic health services, and nutritional conditions, with a particularly severe impact on women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. In this context, the project intervenes with an integrated emergency and early recovery approach, aimed at strengthening community resilience through actions in the areas of food security, health, and nutrition, promoting the restoration of livelihoods and access to essential services.
OBJECTIVES
General objective:
Providing humanitarian assistance to people affected by the protracted crisis in Mandalay Region, Myanmar
Specific objectives:
Strengthen the resilience and access to basic services regarding food security and health of the most vulnerable target population (women, children, elderly and people with disabilities) in Kyaukse District
ACTIVITIES
- Purchase and distribution of seeds and agricultural inputs
- Establishment of 14 demonstration fields (for 2 growing seasons: wet and dry)
- Practical training on sustainable agriculture techniques, post-harvest management , and nutrition-sensitive agriculture to strengthen household food security.
- Organization and implementation of B2B events
- Activation and operation of a mobile health clinic for the distribution of Primary Health Care (PHC), Mother and Child Health (MCH), and screening and referral of malnutrition cases.
- Training of Community Health Workers
- Community awareness sessions
- Distribution of menstrual kits and nutritional packages
RESULTS
- Improved food security and agricultural resilience of vulnerable populations (women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities) in 10 villages of Kyaukse District by restoring family agricultural production capacities and improving water use for agriculture and households.
- Strengthened knowledge and practical skills in sustainable horticulture (CSA), composting, natural pest management, post-harvest management (preservation and processing of products) among beneficiary families, including the fundamental principles of nutrition-sensitive agriculture (applied to improve food security and the quality of the family diet).
- Promoted the restoration and strengthening of local trade channels by revitalizing economic relations between agricultural producers and market operators, contributing to the sustainable economic recovery of rural communities in Kyaukse district.
- Improved access to basic health and nutrition services for vulnerable populations in remote villages in Kyaukse and Sintgaing townships, with a focus on maternal, newborn, and child health and cases requiring referral to secondary health facilities.
- Strengthen local communities’ knowledge and skills in health prevention, hygiene, nutrition, and reproductive health through the training of community health workers.
- Improved sanitation and hygiene conditions for vulnerable families in target villages through the distribution of sexual and menstrual health kits.
BENEFICIARIES
Direct beneficiaries: 1,000 families (4,200 people of which 1,915 men and 2,285 women).
Indirect beneficiaries: At least 15,000 people (beneficiary village communities)
